The Milky Way Galaxy is a flat, spiral cloud, containing approximately one hundred billion stars. Bulging in the the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick, this galaxy has a diameter of one hundred thousand light years. For simpler identification purposes, Federation scientists devised a way to split up the galaxy for acurate mapping and exploration purposes. Their system employs quadrants and sectors. The Milky Way is split into four quadrants: the Alpha Quadrant, the Beta Quadrant, the Gamma Quadrant, and the Delta Quadrant. The Delta Quadrant is the farthest quadrant from Federation space. To give some idea of the properties of each of the quadrants, here are a few examples. The Alpha Quadrant is the home to the majority of the Federation, the Cardassian Union, and the Bajoran system, and the planet Earth is located on the border of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The Beta Quadrant holds both the majority of theKlingon and the Romulan Empires(these empires spill into the Alpha Quadrant) and a part of the Federation as well. The Gamma Quadrant is home to the Dominion and the terminus of the Bajoran wormhole. The Delta Quadrant is thought to house the Borg homeworld, although this has not been confirmed. The USS Voyager has been stranded in and is exploring the Delta Quadrant at present. Quadrants are divided into sectors, and each quadrant contains several thousand sectors. |
